One upon a time there was a man called Joko Tarub. He lived with his mother. His mother was a widow. They lived in a little village.
Joko Tarub was a lazy man. He never helped his mother do his farming. As usual Joko Tarub went to the forest to hunt for a deer. He liked hunting because he did not have any job. He spent hours in the forest hunting any animals if he could not find the deer.
At that time, there was no deer. That day was very hot. He tried to find a shelter to hide. Then he dicided to lie down under the shelter of his rice field on the hill. From here, he could see a beautiful view with a spring.
To his amazement, Joko Tarub could not believe that there were seven goddesses taking a bath in the spring. Then Joko Tarub was anxious to have a look what was going on.
“Oh my God. How beautiful the girls are! These young girls are very beautiful. I can not find such girls in my village”, said Joko Tarub. “
Joko Tarub turned left and right. He hoped that nobody knew about it. He went down the hill and came closer to the spring. He was bewildered what to do. Then he saw a red shawl at the bank of the spring. Using his bow, he took the goddess’ red shawl. He folded and hid it inside his clothes. Not long after that, th goddesses finished taking a bath. They flew again back to the heaven but a goddess who lost her red shawl. She went about to look for her red shawl. Frustrated, she stopped and took a rest crying. Looking at the scene, Joko Tarub came.
“Who are you?”, asked Joko Tarub.
“My name is Prince Nawangwulan. I’m looking for my red shawl. I can’t go back to the heaven because I lose my red shawl. You know this shawl is my supernatural power”,she answered crying.
“Don’t you know or perhaps you are the man who steals my red shawl?” asked Prince Nawangwulan.
“I don’t know your red shawl, Princes. What’s the red shawl for me”, replied Joko Tarub trying to hide his face that he had told a lie.
“So, what can I do for you?”,Joko Tarub offered a help.
“Well, let’s look for my red shawl. Mybe it is about here . If we can not find it, you must protect me”, Nawangwulan answered.
It was dark. They found nothing. Then they went home. Both Nawangwulan and JokoTarub said nothing. Joko felt bewildered what to do. He did not know how to serve and treat her. He did not know where she would sleep and what she wanted to eat.
A few months later Joko Tarub and Nawangwulan got married and had a child. It seemed that they were very happy.
Since that time, Joko Tarub was very diligent. He worked hard everyday. He went to the rice field everyday. The results were amazing. He could harvest the crops abundantly. He could pile up his harvests.
One day Nawangwulan wanted to cook rice. She just cook rice using a stem of rice. Joko Tarub was surprised. After a few minutes the stem of the rice became a bowl of rice.
One day, Nawangwulan wanted to the river to wash the dirty clothes. Before going to the river, she cook rice. She asked her husband not to open the cap of the pan on the fireplace. Her husband nodded.
Nawangwulan went to the river and Joko Tarub looked after their child. Joko cleaned the room and the yard. Finally, he felt tired and hungry. Without thinking too much, he went into the kitchen looking for rice. He opened the pan. He forgot Nawangwulan’s message. Suddenly Nawangwulan appeared.
“OK, you broken the rule. I have told you not to open the pan. Now we have to pound rice before cooking it. It mean that we haveto be more patient”, Nawangwulan explained.
Time went by. Nawangwulan wanted to check the stock of rice they had. To her amazement, she saw her red shawl on a pile of rice. She grabbed it spontaneously. Then she went out looking for Joko Tarub.
“ My husband, I have got my red shawl.I’m very sorry it’s time for me to leave you and be back to the heaven. Please take care our child”, Nawangwulan asked for her husband while saying goodbye.
